On 28th of March 2010, I wrote in my blog at 163.com, which is a China social media site, the followings:-
My friend, Rafeal of Venezuela, sent me some pictures of his country and I posted them up here. He bragged about that his country has the world's most beautiful beaches, the tallest water fall, the Angel Falls, and the most beautiful women, as the country has won the Miss Universe for 2008 and 2009. Looking at the pictures, I think he has every right to brag. I wish I could go there one day. On top of that the country has a lot of oil. Venezuela is one lucky country!!
At the time I thought Venezuelans were probably the luckiest people in the world as their country got almost all the good things in the world. Apparently not. I know that one of my Venezuelan friends is considering leaving the country as he does not feel comfortable living in the country. Among the things he worry about are the high crimes rate in the country, political instability, lack of directions & etc..Today, I learned it from another Venezuelan friend that his country is considering imposing censorship on internet contents. I read about it in an article on Reuter dated 13th of March entitled "Venezuela's Chevez calls for internet controls". It looks like Venerezuela is following China's example.
All my life I live in an information free place. I was born and raised in Hong kong, went to the US for a university education. Like a lot of Hong Kong residents in the 1990s, I sought residentship in Canada for a few years for the fear of loss of freedom due to the change of sovereignty. Prior to 1997, Hong Kong was a colony under British rule. In 1997, Hong Kong returned to China. With hind sight, it is clear my fear for loss of freedom was unwarranted as Hong Kong is just as free as pre-1997. Our press is just free as before. We respect freedom of information and its free flow.
I cannot imagine a country like Venezuela, whose people, or least those I know, are so intelligent could tolerate press or internet censorship. I hope the Chavez's plan for internet control would not come through. I want to stay connected with my Venezuelan friends in such social media nets as Facebook, as they are among the nicest and friendliest people I know.
