Most Americans have big houses and each room has a closet about the size of a kitchen. These closets are used to store personal beings, such as clothes, shoes, underwears or things that one does not want others to see.
"Skeletons in the closet" are things about your past which you would prefer not to tell to other people. Example: "He's a very popular senator but he will never be elected president; he has too many skeletons in the closet." Years after a person has died, only the skeleton remains, and a skeleton of bones can be a frightening thing to look at. "Skeletons in the closet" are embarrassing things which we would like to put away so other people cannot see them. Example: "I don't want anything to do with that guy; he has too many skeletons in the closet." Example: "I had only known her for one week. How could I know what skeletons she had in her closet?"
"Coming out of the closet" or simply "coming out" is a related slang, which now commonly refers to a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender poeple disclosing one's sexual orientation and gender identity. Example: Latin singer Ricky Martin came out of the closet by announcing that he was homosexual.
"Skeletons in the closet" 是指不可告人的秘密，例子”他是一个非常受欢迎的参议员，但他决不会当选总统，他有太多 "Skeletons in the closet"“。一个人去世后，只有骷髅存在，看来很恐怖，"Skeletons in the closet" 是一些不想人家知的尴尬事。例子：“我不想跟他来往，他有太多"Skeletons in the closet"。“例子：”我只认识她一个星期。我怎么能知道她的"Skeletons in the closet?"。
“Coming out of the closet”或简单的“coming out”是一个相关的俚语，通常是指女同性恋者，男同性恋者，双性恋者或变性人透露他们的性倾向和性别认同。例子：拉丁歌手瑞奇马“came out of the closet”宣布他是同性恋。
